Topic : 'Think Local, Act Global' – Malaysia's Response to Global Competition

Brief of Presentation :
The concept of "think global, act local" emerged less than three decades ago at the rise of the concept of cross border economies and digital trade. We are told to think 'big' but act within a perspective of local dynamics, business and culture. And that is what many of us have been doing and are still doing.
Today, our businesses are no longer just across borders. Our market is the world, our consumers, the global citizens. We, with our small entities operate in a truly globalised economy, an open market with sweeping competition. In responding to globalisation of higher education, in being an active player in internationalisation, in order to be heard and seen in the competition, we need to shift the paradigm to "think local, act global."

Speaker's Profile :
A Educationist and Trainer at heart, Mohd Yazid is passionate about education, skills and talent development. He started his career in training and management development in manufacturing, telecommunications and the investment industry. He expanded his expertise into strategy, innovation and business development in senior management and leadership roles in the investment, biotechnology and education industry covering both domestic and global markets. As the founding CEO of Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS), Mohd Yazid led the global promotion of Malaysia as an education hub and set new standards for international student services.

Brief of presentation:
"No one can whistle a symphony. It takes an orchestra to play it. "Halford E. Luccock. In these hyperactive times, the importance of collaboration in teaching and learning cannot be ignored. Purposeful education in the 21st century and beyond, includes working together to solve global issues. If the timing of one member is out of sync it affects the entire orchestra. Collaboration is defined as "individuals are partners that share work as well as ideas and insights to achieve a common objective." Price, L. (2015, July 6). Collaboration vs. Teamwork: What's the difference? The Theatrefolk Blog. Retrieved from https://www.theatrefolk.com/blog/collaboration-vs-teamwork-whats-the-difference During my presentation, I will share my experiences when collaborating with others and tools to harness effective collaboration among students. Firstly, it is difficult to track progress if you do not have a blueprint. Brainstorming ideas and planning is key to the success of any project, especially when collaborating with others. Working to achieve a common goal, is the second component of effective collaboration. The understanding of individual participation and the interdependency of roles is critical to achieve the goal of the project. Interdependency of roles is the third component of effective collaboration. Fourthly, skilled communication ensures that messages are clear and group interactions follow a purposeful narrative. Skilled communication is imperative to develop students' ability to communicate clearly and persuasively with a variety of audiences and varied subject matter. Finally successful collaboration harnesses the strengths of each individual and surpasses weaknesses.

Profile:
In addition to teaching high school learners, Ronelle Klinck, was a part time facilitator at the Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy for 8 years before taking over as the Director of the Teacher Development programme in 2016. An ardent educator, with a fascination in educational technologies which started over 19 years ago. Her passion for teaching has afforded her opportunities to work in schools, tertiary institutions and adult education. She is committed to the continuous professional development of teachers (CPTD) and enjoys hosting webinars, moderating discussions or debates and supporting teachers to master new skills. Purposeful and successful integration of ICT into the curriculum is Ronelle's educational mantra.

Topic/Title of Presentation:
"How do we help children to solve a problem which they have no experience of?": Promises and challenges of the maker education

Brief of presentation:
The maker movement appears to be the new wave of innovation that promises to make teaching and learning more engaging. Championed by major institutions, big companies and even governments, there are two sides to the coin when it comes to making education purposeful in these exciting times. As DIY (do-it-yourself'), applied learning, digital natives and maker culture are becoming fashionable buzzwords among the education circle in recent years, it may be worthwhile for educators to take the pulse of these initiatives and reflect if we are on track to serving the core mission of education in our own communities. After all, several years of experimentation and tinkering, critics and proponents of the maker movement in education are beginning to discover for themselves as to whether this 'fad' will bring real fundamental changes or will it be yet another transient idea for the moment. This presentation will discuss the rise, promises and challenges of "making in education" particulatly from my perspective as an educator, entrepreneur and a maker.

Brief profile:
William is a mash-up of STEM educator, community organizer and a maker who have been actively involved in promoting maker culture within Singapore and the Southeast Asia region. After 15 years in the public teaching service, he took the path less travelled: co-founding OneMaker Group, the first public makerspace in Singapore and organizing regional InnovASEAN maker conferences and coordinate a network of regional makerspaces and even kickstarting his own Internet of Things start-up. He is a fervent supporter of the Arduino prototyping platform and is one of the few certified Arduino Education Partner and Trainer in this part of the world. Currently he is designing hardware peripherals and developing learning resources to promote micro:bit, a pocket-size codeable computer as part of Singapore's national vision to foster interest in programming and maker culture.
